Well I’m sitting in the jury duty call room, with about 200+ more people. I had no idea there would be this many people called for jury duty at once! I guess they have multiple cases they’re finding jurors for. Plus half the people ended up leaving for different reasons. I’m doomed.
Clothing- I did some research online last night to find out what I should be wearing. Some people said suit & tie to show respect to the system, some said jeans & a polo, some said whatever makes you comfortable. I decided a tie would be too much, & dress pants, shoes & a button-up shirt would be sufficient. After being here, I am thinking I did the right thing. 98% of the people here are wearing either jeans or khakis and a button-up shirt or polo. Only a few in a suit.
Exemptions & Qualifications- This lady read them right off the mailer we all got, & a handful got up & left. Why would you NOT read that thing in search for a reason to get out of jury duty? Seems kind of dumb. Some even got up because they didn’t know what county they live in. I feel like going over these, weeds out some of the rotten eggs.
$6 for being here- It’s kind of a slap in the face if you ask me. Why bother? Although I DID just find out, this week, that most people’s work will pay their regular wages while you’re in jury duty. That’s kind of cool. Changes my attitude a little bit.
10 minute break- Not enough time to make a Starbucks run. It would be one thing if you could drink & eat in here, but you can’t. So that’s out. Makes me wish I would have got up half hour earlier. Why don’t they just call it what it is? A cigarette break!
The worst part of being in this room- No cell phone service. We’re supposed to have them off, anyway, but this is my reading material! That’s why I’m writing this email. Lack of something better to do.
Statements the online forums were correct about- This room is DEFINITELY cold! Freezing. Wear pants, bring a sweater or jacket! Bring reading material (don’t count on internet access of any kind). We’ve done a lot of sitting & waiting. I’ve even tested their wifi with my BlackBerry. Nothing. Some people said that these rooms have wifi. That’s pretty awesome. Come on, Williamson Co, get with the times!
Craziest thing I’ve seen since I’ve been here- The judge asked those that have a legit reason for not being here to stand. About 60-70 people stood up. They were counted, then the judge said “do to the numbers we need & the number of people remaining, I do not need to hear your specific reason for needing to be excused from jury duty. Those standing may leave”. Ah HA! I see how it is! Those people just got a “get out of jail free” card, & this has also GREATLY increased my chances of being chosen!!
Haha, they just called out a “MICHAEL JACKSON” & everyone started laughing. Poor guy. I guess we’re still in 1st grade.
Ok, I just got called. Here we go!
